Senator Nelson Applauds Funding for Rochester Highway 14/44 Interchange
Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) today applauded the announcement that the Highway 14/44 interchange project in Rochester has been awarded $60 million in funding from the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) Corridors of Commerce program.
The funding will be used to construct a grade separation at the dangerous interchange, which will improve safety and reduce crash rates. The current intersection, which is at a skewed angle, sees 30,000 vehicles per day traveling at a high rate of speed, with morning commute conditions known to be especially risky. Earlier this year, MnDOT closed down the turn lanes at the intersection because it became so dangerous.
“Everyone who lives in southeast Minnesota knows the dangers of the Highway 14/44 intersection,” Senator Nelson said. “It is one of the most dangerous intersections in the state, and this project will greatly improve safety for the thousands of drivers every day. It will save lives, benefit commuters, and support economic growth in Rochester and our entire region. I am thrilled by this announcement and excited to get it done.”
The Highway 14/44 interchange connects two major regional highways in Rochester. The current at-grade intersection configuration has led to increased congestion and a high crash rate, including severe and fatal crashes. The grade separation will ease congestion by separating thru-traffic on Highway 14 from local traffic on 44th Street. Other safety enhancements will include turn lanes, median barriers, and pedestrian improvements.
Senator Nelson has been a longtime advocate for improving safety along the Highway 14 corridor. In 2023, she authored legislation that was included in the bonding bill to provide additional funding for the project. In addition, over the years Senator Nelson has worked to improve the criteria for Corridors of Commerce projects to emphasize the urgent needs of Greater Minnesota.
